About Mrs Neang Chanthou's Treatment & Recovery
When Mrs Neang Chanthou from Cambodia was diagnosed with breast cancer in her right breast, she sought expert care and travelled to India for treatment. After she visited our cancer institute in Hyderabad, consulted with Dr Ravi Chander Veligeti, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist, she underwent a carefully planned surgical procedure aimed at complete tumour removal and faster recovery.
The operation combining mastectomy, intraoperative frozen section analysis, and sentinel node identification was performed successfully. Mrs Chanthou was discharged feeling completely pain-free and expressed deep satisfaction with the clinical outcomes and the compassionate care she received at Medicover Hyderabad.

What Is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, forming a malignant tumor. It may begin in different parts of the breast, most commonly in the ducts (ductal carcinoma) or lobules (lobular carcinoma). Signs can include a lump, changes in breast shape, skin dimpling, or nipple discharge, though early-stage cancer may not show visible symptoms.
Diagnosis typically involves clinical examination, imaging (mammogram, ultrasound, MRI), and biopsy. Treatment depends on type, stage, and patient health and may include surgery (lumpectomy/mastectomy), intraoperative pathology (frozen section), sentinel node biopsy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy.
Treatment Provided at Medicover Hospitals (for Mrs Chanthou)
Procedures performed:
- Mastectomy: Mastectomy is a surgical removal of the affected breast tissue to ensure complete tumor excision. In Mrs Chanthou's case, the mastectomy was planned to achieve oncological safety while coordinating for the best possible functional and cosmetic outcome.
- Frozen Section: Real-time pathological examination of removed tissue during surgery to confirm clear margins and that no tumor remains at the resection edges. This technique allows immediate additional resection if needed, reducing the need for repeat surgeries.
- Sentinel Node Identification (SNI): A targeted procedure to identify and remove the sentinel lymph nodes, the first node(s) likely to be affected if cancer has spread. If sentinel nodes are free of cancer, it often spares patients from extensive lymph node removal and its complications (like lymphedema).
Outcome: The combined approach ensured accurate tumor clearance, minimised additional procedures, and supported a smooth postoperative recovery. Mrs Chanthou was discharged pain-free and reported high satisfaction with clinical care and nursing support.
