What is an Oligodendroglioma?

An Oligodendroglioma is a rare primary brain tumor that originates from oligodendrocytes, specialized glial cells that support and insulate nerve fibers in the central nervous system. These tumors account for a small percentage of all brain tumors and are most commonly diagnosed in adults between the ages of 30 and 50.

  • Common symptoms include seizures, persistent headaches, and neurological difficulties such as problems with movement, speech, or memory, depending on the tumor's location.
  • Oligodendrogliomas are classified by grade: Grade 2 tumors are typically slow-growing, while Grade 3 (anaplastic) tumors are more aggressive.
  • Diagnosis involves advanced imaging such as MRI, tissue biopsy, and molecular testing for genetic markers including IDH mutation and 1p/19q co-deletion.
  • Treatment usually follows a multidisciplinary approach, combining surgery, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy to control the disease and reduce the risk of recurrence.
