What is Lateral Tongue Cancer?
Lateral tongue cancer is a type of oral cancer that develops on the sides of the tongue. It is the most common form of tongue cancer and is classified under head and neck cancers. In most cases, it presents as squamous cell carcinoma, originating from the thin, flat cells lining the surface of the tongue.
Common symptoms include:
- A persistent sore, ulcer, or red/white patch on the side of the tongue that does not heal.
- A painful lump, thickening, or swelling of the tongue.
- Difficulty or pain while chewing, speaking, or swallowing.
- Unexplained bleeding or numbness of the tongue.
Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in achieving favorable outcomes. Treatment is tailored based on the tumor's size, stage and spread.
