What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast begin to grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor. It most often starts in the milk ducts or milk-producing lobules. Although it is a serious condition, breast cancer is highly treatable when diagnosed early and managed with the right combination of therapies.
Common symptoms of breast cancer may include:
- A lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
- Changes in breast size, shape, or appearance
- Skin changes such as redness, dimpling, or puckering
- Nipple discharge or nipple turning inward
Treatment depends on the stage and type of breast cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is frequently used after surgery to destroy any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence.
