About Teja Chavan's Treatment
For Teja Chavan, the diagnosis of AL Amyloidosis brought significant physical and emotional challenges. Her condition caused severe swelling and mobility issues, making daily life extremely difficult. After undergoing an intense phase of chemotherapy, the next critical question was how to achieve long-term disease control and regain her quality of life.
Her family found clarity and reassurance under the guidance of Dr Niket Kedar Mantri, Consultant Hematologist and Bone Marrow Transplant at Medicover Hospitals, Chh. Sambhajinagar. Although the idea of a Bone Marrow Transplant initially felt overwhelming, the doctor's clear explanations and compassionate approach helped the family take this important step with confidence. The month-long treatment journey was carefully managed, leading to a successful outcome and steady recovery.
Patient Words
Initially, Teja suffered from severe swelling and mobility issues and had to undergo a difficult phase of chemotherapy. We were hesitant about a bone marrow transplant, but Dr Mantri explained everything patiently and gave us the confidence to proceed. The recovery was much smoother and less painful than we expected. The hospital staff were extremely supportive throughout the entire month-long treatment. Today, Teja is recovering well, and we are deeply grateful for the care and positive outcome.
What is AL Amyloidosis?
AL Amyloidosis, also known as primary amyloidosis, is a rare and serious disorder caused by the abnormal production of protein fragments called amyloid. These proteins are produced in the bone marrow and can deposit in various organs, interfering with their normal function.
The condition is often associated with plasma cell disorders and may affect vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, nerves, and gastrointestinal system.
Symptoms vary depending on organ involvement but commonly include:
- Persistent fatigue and weakness
- Swelling in the legs, ankles, or around the eyes
- Shortness of breath
- Unexplained weight loss
- Mobility problems or nerve-related symptoms
Treatment focuses on stopping the production of abnormal proteins. In eligible patients, high-dose chemotherapy followed by an autologous stem cell transplant (Bone Marrow Transplant) offers the best chance for long-term disease control.
What Treatment did we provide to Teja Chavan at Medicover?
At Medicover Hospitals, Teja Chavan received advanced treatment for AL Amyloidosis under the care of Dr Niket Kedar Mantri. Considering the severity of her condition and her response to chemotherapy, an Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant was chosen as the most effective treatment approach.
The treatment process included:
- High-dose chemotherapy to eliminate the abnormal plasma cells producing amyloid proteins
- Collection and preservation of Teja's own healthy stem cells prior to chemotherapy
- Reinfusion of the preserved stem cells to restore healthy bone marrow function
- Close monitoring and supportive care over several weeks to manage side effects and prevent infections
The successful completion of the transplant marked a major milestone in Teja Chavan's treatment journey. With stabilized health and improving mobility, she is now on a structured recovery path, supported by ongoing medical follow-up and care.
