What is Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)?
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of serious blood and bone marrow cancer. It usually affects white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. In AML, the bone marrow produces abnormal, immature blood cells (myeloblasts) that multiply rapidly and crowd out healthy cells, disrupting the production of normal blood cells. This can lead to symptoms such as fever, persistent fatigue, easy bruising, or frequent bleeding. AML requires timely and specific treatment to achieve remission, which means tests show that blood counts are normal and leukemia cells are not detected.
