Medicover Hospitals Successfully Treated a Rare Swallowing Disorder Using Advanced Endoscopic Care

30th Dec 2025 | Medicover Hospitals | Hyderabad

At Medicover Hospitals, Hitech City, we have successfully restored normal swallowing ability and quality of life to Mr. Usman Babiker Elhaj, a 46-year-old patient who had been suffering from a rare esophageal disease for nearly two and a half years.

Overview of a Patient’s Condition

Mr. Osman was suffering from severe difficulty in swallowing, persistent chest pain, and frequent regurgitation of food through his nose. Over time, his condition worsened, making it difficult for him to eat properly and receive adequate nutrition.

Despite prolonged medical treatment and regular use of acid-reducing medications, there was no improvement in his symptoms. Because swallowing difficulties are often mistaken for common stomach problems, the condition remained undiagnosed for a long time, affecting his daily life and overall health.

Our Expert Clinical Diagnosis

Following detailed examinations conducted at Medicover Hospitals, Dr Moka Praneeth, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, identified an esophagus that was distended and filled with food.

Further tests confirmed the diagnosis of achalasia cardia, a rare condition in which the muscles at the lower end of the esophagus fail to relax, preventing food from passing normally into the stomach.

How We Treated the Patient With a Rare Swallowing Disorder?

To avoid traditional open or laparoscopic surgery, our team opted for Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM), an advanced, minimally invasive endoscopic procedure.

This treatment was performed entirely through the mouth, without any external incisions or scars.

During the procedure:

  • A tunnel was created inside the esophageal wall
  • The tight lower esophageal muscle was carefully divided
  • Normal passage of food into the stomach was restored

The procedure was completed safely and successfully, with minimal discomfort and no surgical incisions.

Outcome and Recovery

After the successful POEM procedure, the patient experienced immediate relief from his swallowing difficulty. He is able to eat normally. His chest pain subsided, and nutritional intake returned to normal.

He recovered quickly and resumed his daily activities without complications. This treatment provided a long-term solution to a problem that had been affecting his life for years.

Doctor’s Perspective

Dr. Moka Praneeth, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist, said:

“Achalasia cardia is a disabling condition that severely affects nutrition and quality of life. Many patients ignore swallowing difficulty, assuming it is a gas or acidity problem. POEM has emerged as a major breakthrough, offering a permanent solution without major surgery or scars.”

He added:

“We have been successfully performing POEM procedures at Medicover Hospitals for the past three years. This case once again proves how advanced minimally invasive endoscopic treatments can effectively manage complex gastrointestinal conditions.”
