At Medicover Hospital in Navi Mumbai, we have achieved a historic milestone in advanced cardiac care by successfully performing Navi Mumbai's first true dual-chamber leadless pacemaker implantation in Maharashtra.
This landmark procedure was performed using Abbott's AVEIR dual-chamber leadless pacemaker. Representing a major advancement in the treatment of complex heart rhythm disorders, especially for patients at very high surgical risk.
This achievement reinforces Medicover Hospitals' position as a leader in cutting-edge, patient-friendly cardiac technologies, bringing global innovations closer to patients in this region.
A High-Risk Patient with Life-Threatening Cardiac Events
The patient, a 75-year-old woman from Belapur, Navi Mumbai (name changed for privacy), had a long and complex medical history.
She was living with:
- Coronary artery disease
- Previous Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
- Dementia
- Parkinson's disease
- A bleeding disorder
- Long-term use of blood thinners
Over time, she began experiencing recurrent episodes of sudden fainting (syncope), which caused constant fear for her and her family. Her condition worsened when she suffered a heart attack, leaving her in a very critical state.
With repeated syncopal episodes, recorded pauses in heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest, pacemaker treatment became a life-saving necessity.
Why Conventional Pacemaker Surgery Was Too Risky?
Although a pacemaker was necessary, traditional pacemaker implantation posed significant risks for this patient:
- High risk of bleeding
- Increased risk of infection
- Surgical pocket complications
- Lead-related long-term complications
- Frailty and neurological comorbidities
Following a thorough evaluation and multidisciplinary discussions, our cardiac team determined that a leadless pacemaker procedure would offer the safest and most effective solution.
Emergency Admission and Critical Stabilization
On December 17, the patient was brought to Medicover Hospitals as an emergency with:
- Syncopal attack
- Chest pain
- Altered consciousness
She was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit, where emergency pacing was initiated using transcutaneous pacemaker pads. Continuous cardiac monitoring revealed multiple prolonged pauses in her heart rhythm. She briefly experienced cardiac arrest, which was promptly managed with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Further evaluation with Holter monitoring confirmed recurrent episodes of dangerous cardiac pauses, making permanent pacing necessary.
The Historic Procedure in Maharashtra
After stabilization, the patient was scheduled for pacemaker implantation on December 26th.
The procedure was successfully performed by:
- Dr Keshav Dada Kale, Consultant & Interventional Cardiologist
- Dr Vineeta Arora, Consultant Cardiologist
Supported by a highly skilled cardiology team, anesthesia team, and cath lab staff, the implantation was performed under local anesthesia with conscious sedation, ensuring maximum safety and comfort.
Why AVEIR Dual-Chamber Leadless Pacemaker Is a Game-Changer?
The AVEIR Dual Chamber Leadless Pacemaker is a revolutionary advancement in cardiac rhythm management.
Unlike conventional pacemakers:
- It provides true dual-chamber pacing (atria and ventricles)
- It requires no surgical incision
- It has no leads or a chest pocket
- It dramatically reduces infection and bleeding risk
- It offers retrievability
- It delivers an exceptional battery life of over 18 years
The device was implanted entirely through a catheter, eliminating the need for stitches or surgical wound care. The procedure lasted approximately 2-3 hours and was completed smoothly without any complications.
Outcome and Recovery
Following the implantation:
- The patient's heart rhythm stabilized
- Syncopal episodes resolved
- No further cardiac pauses were noted
- Recovery was steady and uneventful
She was discharged on December 30, comfortable, stable, and able to resume daily activities with renewed confidence. She has been advised routine pacemaker follow-up, with annual device checks.
Expert Perspective
Dr. Keshav Kale, Consultant & Interventional Cardiologist, said:
"This patient has one of the most complex clinical profiles we encounter – prior bypass surgery, recurrent syncope, cardiac arrest, and multiple comorbidities such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, and a risk of bleeding. In such cases, traditional pacemakers pose significant risks. The AVEIR dual-chamber leadless pacemaker allowed us to provide effective pacing without incisions or leads, making it a safer option."
He further added:
"This technology is a true breakthrough. It combines the physiological benefits of a traditional pacemaker with the safety of a minimally invasive, leadless procedure. Timely intervention in this case prevented recurrent cardiac arrest and saved the patient's life."
Patient's Experience
The patient shared:
“I was suffering from repeated fainting and had even experienced a cardiac arrest. With my health conditions, surgery felt frightening. The doctors at Medicover explained everything clearly. Today, I feel safe and relieved knowing I received advanced treatment without major surgery. I am grateful to the entire team for giving me confidence and hope.”
