Patient Words

"Receiving this diagnosis was frightening, but the doctors and staff at Medicover Cancer Institute gave me confidence from the very beginning. Dr Avinash explained the surgery clearly and supported me throughout the process. Although the operation was complex, my recovery was smooth, and I was able to go home within a week. I am very thankful for the skilled treatment and the caring environment that helped me heal."

What is a periampullary carcinoma

Periampullary carcinoma is a type of cancer that develops near the ampulla of Vater, where the bile duct and pancreatic duct open into the small intestine. Because this area plays an important role in digestion, tumors here can cause early symptoms, most commonly related to bile flow blockage.

  • Common symptoms include jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin), abdominal discomfort, nausea and pale-colored stools.
  • The location of the tumor makes treatment challenging, as it is close to vital organs such as the pancreas, bile ducts and intestine.
  • Surgery is usually the main treatment, often followed by additional therapies like chemotherapy or radiation depending on the individual case.

What Treatment did we provide to Bhadramma at Medicover?

Bhadramma underwent a Whipple's Surgery (pancreaticoduodenectomy) at Medicover Hospitals, Cancer Institute Nellore, performed by Dr Sowdepalli Avinash and the surgical team. This procedure was chosen because it offers the best chance to completely remove periampullary tumors. During the surgery, the head of the pancreas, part of the small intestine, the gallbladder, and a portion of the bile duct were removed, followed by reconstruction of the digestive system.

  • Detailed diagnostic tests were conducted after she presented with jaundice to confirm the diagnosis and plan surgery.
  • The Whipple procedure was successfully performed by an experienced multidisciplinary surgical team.
  • Focused post-operative care supported quick healing, allowing Bhadramma to recover and be discharged within one week.
