What is Multiple myeloma
Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that starts in plasma cells, which are white blood cells found in the bone marrow. In this condition, abnormal plasma cells multiply uncontrollably and produce harmful proteins. This can weaken bones, reduce healthy blood cells, and affect kidney function.
- Common symptoms include bone pain, especially in the back or ribs, and a higher risk of fractures.
- Patients may feel tired or weak due to low red blood cell counts (anemia).
- Frequent infections can occur because the immune system is weakened.
- Kidney problems may develop due to abnormal proteins in the blood.
Treatment for Multiple myeloma often includes medications such as chemotherapy or targeted therapy. In suitable patients, stem cell or bone marrow transplantation is used to control the disease and improve quality of life.
