About Patient's Treatment and Recovery
N. Thirupalu's recovery journey highlights how advanced cancer care is now available closer to home. When he was diagnosed with recurrent Hodgkin lymphoma, his condition required highly specialized treatment. He received care at Medicover Hospitals, Cancer Institute Nellore, under the supervision of Dr G Ranga Raman, an experienced Oncologist. Given the recurrence of the disease, an Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant was advised, a complex procedure usually limited to major metro hospitals. The successful completion of this treatment, supported through the Aarogyasri healthcare scheme, enabled Mr Thirupalu to receive life-saving care locally. This milestone reflects both his resilience and Medicover's commitment to delivering advanced oncology services in Nellore.
Patient Words
"Accessing advanced cancer treatment in my own city was a tremendous comfort for both me and my family. The successful transplant has given me confidence and freedom from the ongoing fear of recurrence. Knowing that this high-level care was available under a government healthcare scheme reassured me that my well-being truly mattered. I am thankful for the commitment and support shown throughout my recovery."
What is a Hodgkin lymphoma
Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which plays a key role in the body's immune defense. It begins in a type of white blood cell called B lymphocytes and is considered one of the more treatable cancers when managed appropriately.
- Common symptoms include painless swelling of lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin.
- Patients may also experience fever, heavy night sweats, unexplained weight loss, and ongoing fatigue.
- Diagnosis is confirmed through imaging tests and lymph node biopsy.
- Treatment usually involves chemotherapy and sometimes radiation therapy. In recurrent or advanced cases, a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant may be recommended.
For patients with relapsed disease, a bone marrow transplant allows doctors to use high-dose chemotherapy safely to destroy remaining cancer cells.
What Treatment did we provide to N Thirupalu at Medicover?
Due to the recurrence of Hodgkin lymphoma, the oncology team at Medicover Hospitals, Cancer Institute Nellore, led by Dr G Ranga Raman, recommended an Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant as the most effective treatment option. This advanced procedure, performed successfully at the institute, marked a significant achievement for cancer care in Nellore. The treatment process included:
- Collection of Mr Thirupalu's own healthy stem cells before intensive treatment.
- Administration of high-dose chemotherapy to eliminate the remaining cancer cells.
- Reinfusion of the stored stem cells to help restore normal bone marrow function.
The entire treatment was carried out in a controlled and sterile environment to ensure patient safety. By offering this complex procedure locally, Medicover Hospitals enabled Mr Thirupalu to receive advanced, life-saving care without the need to travel to distant cities.
