Rising Concern: Increasing Cases of Pancreatic Cancer

In Telangana, the cases of pancreatic cancer have been steadily increasing. Individuals aged 35 to 50 years are the most affected. Often known as a “silent killer”, this disease shows minimal symptoms in its early stages, making timely diagnosis a big challenge.

Our gastroenterology and oncology teams have observed that even individuals with no major health issues are frequently diagnosed at advanced stages, by which time the cancer may have already spread. Symptoms like abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, jaundice, and digestive problems typically appear only when the condition progresses.

In Telangana, experts attribute the rise in cases to lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity, poor dietary habits, obesity, diabetes, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Across India, an estimated 15,000 cases of pancreatic cancer are reported every year. Unfortunately, nearly 80% of patients seek medical care only at a late stage, which significantly reducing treatment success and survival rates.
