Successful Spine Surgery Medicover Nizamabad

A 16-year-old boy was brought to Medicover with symptoms such as abdominal pain and repeated vomiting. However, as the pain worsened, the family noticed that the boy was unable to eat, walk comfortably, or sit upright due to discomfort. They rushed him to Medicover Hospital in Bengaluru for urgent evaluation.

Diagnosing of A Rare and Dangerous Condition

To understand the cause, our medical team performed an emergency CT scan. The scan revealed a rare condition called midgut volvulus, with midgut malrotation.

Normally, when a baby is developing inside the womb, the intestines rotate in the correct position. In this case, the intestines did not rotate normally, causing them to twist later in life. This twisting cuts off blood flow to the intestines, creating a life-threatening emergency.

The condition is usually seen in infants and very young children. It is rare in teenagers and is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms often resemble common stomach problems. If not treated in time, the intestine can become gangrenous (die), needing to be removed, and this can be fatal.

The Life-Saving Surgery | Exploratory Laparotomy Procedure

The case was managed by Dr Vamshi Krishna, General Surgeon at Medicover Hospital, Whitefield. Understanding the urgency, our medical team immediately prepared the patient for surgery. The procedure performed was an exploratory laparotomy with Ladd's Procedure.

The surgery involves:

  • Untwisting the intestines
  • Restoring blood flow
  • Repositioning the intestines to prevent future twisting
  • Creating space and alignment to avoid recurrence

The procedure was successful, and the blood supply to the intestine was completely restored.

Recovery and Outcome

After surgery:

  • The boy recovered steadily
  • Pain and vomiting completely resolved
  • He was able to eat normally
  • He started walking without discomfort
  • No part of the intestine needed to be removed

He is now healthy, active and back to his daily routine. His family expressed their deepest gratitude to the medical team.

Doctor's Insight

Dr Vamshi Krishna shared:

"This condition is extremely rare at this age. Without timely surgery, the intestines could have become gangrenous within hours. Early diagnosis, rapid decision-making, and immediate surgical correction saved this boy's life."
