Know how our doctors at Medicover Hospital, Nashik successfully performed a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on an 11-year-old boy weighing 95 kg, diagnosed with Prader–Willi Syndrome (PWS).
Prader–Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder that causes uncontrolled hunger and severe obesity. This case required precise planning and specialized surgical care due to the child’s young age, severe obesity, and associated health risks. The surgery was performed under the leadership of Dr Sandeep Sabnis, Senior Bariatric Surgeon in Nashik.
About the Case
The young patient was struggling with rapid weight gain, sleep apnea, movement difficulties, and was at high risk of developing diabetes and hypertension in the near future.
Conventional methods like diet control and lifestyle changes had not been effective because of the strong appetite drive caused by Prader–Willi Syndrome.
After a comprehensive evaluation, our multidisciplinary team, including
Decided that laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy would be the safest and most effective treatment option.
How We Treated the Patient?
The surgery was performed laparoscopically, using very small incisions. Through this minimally invasive approach, a part of the stomach responsible for excessive hunger was removed, reducing food intake and helping long-term weight control.
The operation was completed successfully and without complications. The child showed excellent post-surgical recovery and is expected to be discharged within a day or two.
Doctors’ Insights
Dr Sandeep Sabnis, Senior Bariatric Surgeon, explained:
“In Prader–Willi Syndrome, appetite control is nearly impossible through diet alone. For children who develop extreme obesity, sleeve gastrectomy can be a safe and lifesaving intervention when managed carefully by an experienced team.”
Dr Tushar Godbole, Pediatric Endocrinologist, added:
“This case highlights how early intervention with the right surgical approach can prevent future metabolic and cardiac complications in such children.”
Dr Prakhar Gupta and Dr Sandeep Bhangale emphasized the importance of close multidisciplinary teamwork in ensuring the patient’s safety and recovery.
