Success Story of Two-Year-Old Girl Rescued by Medicover Hospital Doctors in Vizag
31st Oct 2025 | Medicover Hospitals | VizagA two-year-old girl accidentally swallowed nearly 20 iron tablets, causing her parents to panic. They immediately brought her to the Emergency Department at our Medicover Women and Child Hospital, Visakhapatnam. Upon arrival, the child was extremely weak, tired, and struggled to breathe.
Emergency Treatment, Diagnosis and Advanced Care
Under the supervision of Dr. Sai Sunil Kishore, a Consultant Pediatric Intensivist, our emergency medical team quickly began treatment. Blood tests showed dangerously high iron levels, and the child also had severe metabolic acidosis. She was immediately moved to our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where specialized chelation therapy was started to remove the excess iron from her body.
As her condition started to improve, she developed new complications due to severe sepsis. Our team provided IVIG therapy along with advanced antibiotics. After receiving continuous intensive care for seven weeks in our ICU, the child’s lungs, liver, and other vital organs gradually recovered.
Road to Recovery and Discharge
Dr Sai Sunil Kishore explained that consuming a large number of iron tablets can cause liver failure, metabolic disturbances, and life-threatening respiratory issues in children. With timely medical attention, specialised chelation therapy, advanced ventilatory support, and appropriate blood patch pleurodesis treatment, our team was able to save her life.
He further shared that the child’s full recovery was made possible through continuous monitoring, teamwork, and multidisciplinary coordination. After seven weeks of dedicated care, the child was discharged in good health, a proud and heartwarming moment for our entire Medicover Hospital team at Vizag.
