Rare Brain Disease Successfully Treated in an 11-month-old Baby at Medicover Women & Child Hospitals, Visakhapatnam

At Medicover Women & Child Hospitals in Visakhapatnam, our doctors successfully treated an 11-month-old infant suffering from Acute Necrotizing Encephalopathy (ANE), a rare and life-threatening brain disorder.

ANE is extremely rare and carries a high risk of causing severe neurological damage or fatal consequences. Without fast, expert treatment, ANE can cause permanent brain damage or even death.

The baby's parents brought her in with a high fever and repeated seizures. Her condition worsened quickly, she became less responsive, her breathing struggled, and her little body was fighting to stay stable.

A Race Against Time in the PICU

As the child's condition deteriorated, our emergency response team immediately transferred the child to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and initiated advanced life-support measures.

Due to worsening respiratory distress and prolonged seizures, the child required ventilator support while our Pediatric Critical Care team carried out continuous monitoring and stabilization measures.

Advanced MRI scans revealed severe swelling and damage in critical parts of her brain. This confirmed the diagnosis of ANE and helped doctors plan the right course of treatment.

How Our Multidisciplinary Team Treated Her

A specialist team led by Dr. M Sai Sunil Kishore, Head of Neonatology & Pediatrics (Vizag Cluster), along with Dr. Vijay Krishna K (Consultant Pediatrician & Neonatologist) and Dr. Manju Vani, put together a targeted treatment plan:

  • Antiviral and anti-seizure medicines to control the infection and stop the seizures
  • High-dose steroids and immunoglobulin therapy to calm the immune system
  • Tocilizumab, a targeted biological drug, to reduce brain inflammation and support recovery

This combination of treatments is used only in the most severe cases of ANE and requires both the right expertise and the right technology to deliver safely.

The Recovery That Gave a Family Hope

Following continuous monitoring and advanced treatment, the baby showed gradual improvement, began responding to sounds, and regained the ability to recognize voices and environmental stimuli.

As the child's condition stabilized, ventilator support was successfully withdrawn, and recovery progressed steadily under close supervision of our pediatric and critical care specialists.

The baby was discharged in stable condition, marking a remarkable recovery from a life-threatening neurological disease that requires highly specialized and timely medical intervention.

Our Commitment to Advanced Pediatric Care in Vizag

Treating rare conditions like Acute Necrotizing Encephalopathy requires more than good medicine. It takes a team that moves quickly, thinks deeply, and never gives up on the smallest patients.

This case is a reflection of the level of pediatric critical care we are committed to providing at Medicover Women & Child Hospitals, Visakhapatnam.

If your child is showing signs of neurological distress, seizures, loss of consciousness, or rapid deterioration, seek emergency care immediately. Early intervention makes all the difference.
