What is a Hole in the Heart?

A "hole in the heart" most commonly refers to a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). It is a congenital heart condition, meaning it is present from birth, where there is an opening in the wall (septum) that separates the two lower chambers of the heart.

Because of this opening, oxygen-rich blood can flow from the left side of the heart to the right side, causing the heart and lungs to work harder. If left untreated, larger defects may lead to complications over time.

Symptoms may vary depending on the size of the defect and can include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Fast or heavy breathing
  • Easy tiredness during activity
  • Heart murmur detected during examination

Small VSDs may close on their own, but moderate to large defects usually require treatment. One effective option is VSD Device Closure, which avoids open-heart surgery in suitable patients.

What Treatment did we provide to Rupa at Medicover?

At Medicover Hospitals, Visakhapatnam, Rupa underwent a successful VSD device closure under the expert guidance of Dr Alluri Ashok Raju and the cardiac care team.

This transcatheter procedure was chosen as a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgery, offering faster recovery and reduced discomfort.

The treatment process included:

  • Diagnosis and Planning: Detailed imaging studies were conducted to assess the size and location of the defect.
  • Catheter-Based Procedure: A thin, flexible catheter was guided through a blood vessel to reach the heart.
  • Device Placement: A specially designed closure device was positioned to seal the opening in the heart.
  • Post-Procedure Care: Careful monitoring ensured that the device was stable and recovery was smooth.

This advanced and minimally invasive treatment helped Rupa recover safely and confidently, allowing her to move forward with improved heart health.
