What is Diabetic Ketoacidosis?
Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication of diabetes that happens when the body produces very high levels of blood acids called ketones. It usually occurs when there is not enough insulin in the body.
Patients may experience excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, confusion, fruity-smelling breath, and difficulty breathing.
If untreated, DKA can become life-threatening which is why immediate hospital treatment is critical. Early diagnosis, IV fluids, insulin therapy, and continuous monitoring help stabilize the patient and prevent complications.
