About Narendra's Treatment and Recovery

Narendra was born with a complex congenital heart condition commonly known as a "hole in the heart," medically diagnosed as Tetralogy of Fallot. This serious condition affected the normal flow of oxygen-rich blood to his lungs, causing significant health concerns early in life.

After consulting multiple centers, his family sought specialized pediatric cardiac care at Medicover Hospitals, Visakhapatnam. Narendra was placed under the expert care of Dr Karunakara Padhy, CTVS, who carefully evaluated his condition and explained the need for a staged surgical approach.

A tetralogy of fallot BT shunt surgery was recommended as a life-saving initial procedure to stabilize his heart and improve oxygen levels, marking a crucial turning point in his recovery journey.

Choosing Medicover Hospitals, Visakhapatnam, for Narendra's treatment proved to be the best decision. Dr Karunakara Padhy and the entire medical team handled our baby with exceptional care and precision. After the BT Shunt surgery, we could clearly see improvements in his health and activity. We are deeply grateful for the life-saving treatment, expert guidance, and emotional support provided to our family during this difficult time."

What is a Hole in The Heart?

The term "hole in the heart" often refers to congenital heart defects, including Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). TOF is a complex condition involving four structural heart abnormalities present at birth, which interfere with normal blood circulation and oxygen delivery to the body.

The four components of Tetralogy of Fallot include:

  • Ventricular Septal Defect (a hole between the lower chambers of the heart)
  • Pulmonary Stenosis (narrowing of the pulmonary valve or artery)
  • Overriding Aorta (the main artery positioned over the heart defect)
  • Right Ventricular Hypertrophy (thickening of the heart's right lower chamber)

Babies with TOF often show symptoms such as bluish skin discoloration (cyanosis), breathing difficulty, poor feeding, and sudden episodes of low oxygen levels known as "tet spells." Surgical treatment, often performed in stages, is essential to improve survival and quality of life.

What Treatment did we provide to Narendra at Medicover?

At Medicover Hospitals, Visakhapatnam, Narendra underwent a Tetralogy of Fallot BT Shunt surgery performed by Dr Karunakara Padhy. This procedure was chosen as the most appropriate initial intervention to stabilize his condition and increase blood flow to the lungs.

The treatment process included:

  • Accurate Diagnosis: Detailed cardiac evaluation confirming Tetralogy of Fallot.
  • BT Shunt Surgery: Creation of a temporary blood vessel connection to improve pulmonary blood flow and oxygen levels.
  • Post-operative Monitoring: Intensive pediatric cardiac care to ensure the shunt functioned properly and supported healthy recovery.

This critical surgical intervention allowed Narendra to gain strength and stability, preparing him for potential definitive heart repair in the future and highlighting Medicover Hospitals' expertise in advanced pediatric cardiac surgery.
