About Patient's Treatment and Recovery
Lavanya's health journey began in childhood with a serious congenital heart condition in which an essential heart valve was absent. Over time, this missing valve placed constant strain on her heart, leading to progressive complications and affecting the function of other organs. Despite seeking treatment at multiple centers, her condition required highly specialized cardiac care.
Hope emerged when Lavanya and her family approached Medicover Hospitals, Visakhapatnam. Under the expert care of Dr Karunakara Padhy, Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon (CTVS), a comprehensive evaluation was performed.
Given the severity and long-standing nature of the defect, a life-saving Heart Valve Replacement was advised. This surgery marked a critical turning point, significantly improving her cardiac function and overall health.

What is a Missing Heart Valve (Tricuspid Atresia)?
A missing or improperly formed heart valve is a congenital heart defect present from birth. One such condition is tricuspid atresia, where the tricuspid valve, located between the right upper and lower chambers of the heart, fails to develop. As a result, blood cannot flow normally through the heart, reducing the amount of oxygen reaching the lungs and body.
This condition causes the heart to work harder and may lead to long-term complications if not corrected. Common symptoms include:
- Chronic fatigue and weakness
- Shortness of breath, especially during activity
- Bluish discoloration of the lips or skin (cyanosis)
- Delayed growth or poor stamina
Treatment typically involves surgical intervention to restore proper blood flow. In complex or long-standing cases, heart valve replacement becomes a critical solution to support normal heart function.
