What is Tetralogy of Fallot?
Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a rare and complex congenital heart defect that is present from birth. It involves four structural abnormalities in the heart that reduce the amount of oxygen-rich blood flowing to the body.
Due to poor oxygenation, babies with TOF often develop a bluish color of the skin and lips, known as cyanosis.
Common symptoms in infants include:
- Bluish discoloration of the lips, skin, or fingertips
- Sudden episodes of deep blue coloring, known as "Tet spells."
- Difficulty feeding or poor weight gain
- Becoming tired easily
Surgical treatment is required to improve blood flow and oxygen levels. Depending on the baby's age and condition, this may involve a temporary procedure like a BT shunt or a complete corrective surgery later.
What Treatment did we provide to Ch. Narendra at Medicover?
At Medicover Hospitals, Visakhapatnam, Ch. Narendra underwent a successful BT shunt (Blalock-Taussig shunt) procedure under the expert care of Dr Karunakara Padhy and the pediatric cardiac surgery team.
This procedure was performed as a life-saving, temporary solution to improve blood flow to the lungs and increase oxygen levels until the child becomes eligible for complete corrective heart surgery.
The treatment process included:
- Surgical creation of a shunt between a major blood vessel and the pulmonary artery
- Improved blood flow to the lungs to enhance oxygen supply
- Continuous and careful post-operative monitoring in a specialized pediatric cardiac care setting
The successful outcome of the BT shunt procedure significantly improved the baby's oxygen levels and overall condition, demonstrating Medicover Hospitals' expertise in managing complex and critical pediatric heart conditions.
