What is Tuberculous Meningitis with Seizures S/P VP Shunt

Tuberculous Meningitis (TBM) is a serious form of tuberculosis affecting the meninges, the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord. In children, it can lead to inflammation and fluid buildup (hydrocephalus), often causing seizures.

  • Symptoms can include severe headache, fever, stiff neck and changes in mental alertness.
  • Seizures are common due to swelling in the brain or complications like hydrocephalus.
  • Treatment requires a long course of anti-TB medications, usually for at least 12 months, sometimes with corticosteroids to reduce inflammation.
  • Hydrocephalus may require a Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt, a small tube and valve system that drains excess fluid from the brain to the abdomen, relieving pressure.
