What is Pradaxa?

  • Pradaxa is an anticoagulant which helps to prevent the formation of blood clots. The medication is used for lowering the risk of stroke caused due to blood clot in people with a heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation. Pradaxa tablets are also used when atrial fibrillation is not caused by heart valve problems.
  • The medications are also used after hip replacement surgery for preventing a type of blood clot called deep vein thrombosis, which can lead to blood clots in the lungs.

    Pradaxa uses:

  • The medication is used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with a medical condition called atrial fibrillation. With atrial fibrillation, part of the heart doesn't beat the way it should. This can lead to the formation of blood clots and increase your risk of stroke.
  • Pradaxa tablets are used to treat blood clots in the veins of your legs or lungs and reduce your risk of recurrence. It also helps in preventing blood clots in the legs and lungs of people who have just had hip replacement surgery.

    How to take Pradaxa?

  • Take it as directed by your doctor, usually once a day, to prevent clots after hip or knee replacement surgery. Avoid antacids within 24 hours of surgery, or dabigatran may not work as well. If you have stomach upset while taking this medicine, take it with food.
  • Swallow the capsules with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 millilitres). Do not crush, chew or break the capsules. Doing so can release all drugs at once, increasing the risk of side effects. Do not place this medicine in a pillbox or a medicine reminder box. It must be kept tightly closed in the original bottle (or blister pack) to protect it from moisture.
  • The dose is based on your medical condition, kidney function, response to treatment, and other medications that you may be taking. Please be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
  • Missed Dose:

  • Missing one or two-dose of Pradaxa won’t show any effect on your body. The skipped dose causes no problem. But with some medication, it won’t work if you don’t take the dosage on time.
