Successful Liver Transplant for a Critically Ill Patient at Medicover Hospitals, Hitech City

30th Dec 2025 | Medicover Hospitals | Hyderabad

At Medicover Hospitals, Hitech City, we successfully performed a life-saving living-donor liver transplant on a 43-year-old man from Somalia, Abdul Khadif, who arrived at our hospital in a critical, life-threatening condition.

When the patient arrived at our hospital, he was suffering from advanced chronic liver disease with multiple severe complications. His condition was rapidly deteriorating, and there was a high risk of death if immediate intervention was not provided.

Patient's Condition on Admission

At the time of admission, the patient had:

His liver function tests revealed that his bilirubin levels had increased to 37 mg/dL, which clearly indicates end-stage liver failure. Given the severity of his condition, an emergency liver transplant was the only option to save his life.

How Did We Manage This High-Risk Case?

Following a rapid evaluation, our multidisciplinary liver transplant team planned and successfully performed a complex living donor liver transplant on October 18, 2025.

The surgery was led by Dr Kishore Reddy, Lead Liver Transplant Surgeon at Medicover Hospitals, Hi-Tech City, with a highly experienced team:

Despite the patient's unstable condition and high surgical risk, the transplant was successfully performed using advanced surgical techniques, critical care planning, and continuous intraoperative monitoring.

Post-Transplant Care and Recovery

Following the transplant, the patient was transferred to the transplant ICU for close monitoring. During the initial recovery phase, he developed a fever and fluid accumulation in the lungs, both of which were effectively managed by our critical care team.

Regular Doppler studies confirmed good blood flow, indicating that the transplanted liver was functioning well. Due to his prolonged illness, the patient had muscle weakness, but with physiotherapy and structured rehabilitation, his strength gradually improved.

At the time of discharge, the patient was:

  • Medically stable
  • Fully conscious
  • Tolerating oral nutrition
  • Continuing rehabilitation therapy

Our Doctors' Perspective

Dr Kishore Reddy, Lead Liver Transplant Surgeon, said:

“This was one of the most complex liver transplant cases we have handled. The patient was critically ill and unconscious for several days. Timely decisions, surgical expertise, and seamless coordination across teams helped us achieve this successful outcome.”

He added:

“Even patients with end-stage liver disease can be given a new lease on life when timely and advanced treatment is provided.”
