Doctors at Medicover Cancer Institute, Hi-Tech City, successfully performed a complex surgery to save the life of an 11-year-old boy who was suffering from a rare and serious chest tumor.
For nearly five months, the boy had been experiencing severe chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and repeated lung infections. At first, the symptoms seemed minor, but his condition gradually became worse. His family consulted several hospitals, but due to the high risk involved and his young age, surgery was not recommended elsewhere.
Finally, the family approached Medicover Cancer Institute, where doctors carefully evaluated his condition and decided to take up the challenge.
Identifying a Rare and Critical Condition
At Medicover, the medical team conducted detailed examinations and advanced imaging tests. They discovered a tumor in the front part of the chest (anterior mediastinum).
The tumor was pressing against the windpipe (trachea) and the heart, making the condition life-threatening. Immediate treatment was required.
A biopsy later confirmed that the tumor was thymoma, a very rare type of chest cancer in children. It is often difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to common respiratory problems.
Careful Planning and Expert Teamwork
Due to the complexity of the case, a team of specialists from Surgical Oncology, Pulmonology, and Neurology collaborated closely to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan.
Under the leadership of Dr. Ravi Chander Veligeti, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist, the team performed a sternotomy (a surgical procedure to open the chest). This allowed them to safely remove the entire tumor while maintaining careful monitoring throughout the operation.
Due to the neurological complications associated with such tumors, special precautions were taken during the administration of anesthesia. This not only ensured patient safety throughout the procedure but also minimized surgical risks.
Fast Recovery and Return to Normal Life
After the successful removal of the tumor, the boy made a remarkable recovery. His breathing returned to normal, and he was discharged just five days after the operation.
Today, he is healthy, back in school, and enjoying a normal childhood under regular medical follow-up and guidance.
Expert Perspective on Early Detection
Dr. Ravi Chander shared:
"Chest cancer tumors, such as thymoma, occur very rarely in children and often remain undiagnosed until symptoms become severe or complications arise."
He noted that a delay in diagnosis increases surgical complexity as well as life-threatening risks. Therefore, he underscored the importance of timely medical evaluation and coordinated expert care in such critical cases.
