A baby girl born extremely early at just 26 weeks and 4 days and weighing only 850 grams was successfully treated and saved at Medicover Hospitals, Pune.
She was in a critical condition at birth and was immediately shifted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on January 9th for advanced care.
Our doctors at Pune successfully saved a premature baby girl weighing a mere 850 grams, who was born in critical condition and required immediate intensive neonatal care.
This case stands as a remarkable example of how modern neonatal care, combined with coordinated multidisciplinary expertise, was utilized to stabilize a fragile infant facing multiple life-threatening medical complications.
High-Risk Pregnancy and Early Delivery
The baby's mother, aged 43, had a high-risk pregnancy. She had multiple health conditions, including:
Because of these complications, the delivery was carefully handled by doctors to ensure both mother and baby were safe.
However, due to extreme prematurity, the baby's organs were not fully developed. Consequently, the baby necessitated immediate respiratory support and intensive supportive care.
Advanced NICU Care and Multidisciplinary Team Approach
Under the leadership of Dr. Dattatray V Kulkarni, Consultant Neonatologist, our Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) team provided;
- Continuous monitoring
- Respiratory support
- Infection control
- Nutritional management during extremely critical medical situations
The infant received;
- Surfactant therapy for Respiratory Distress Syndrome
- Prolonged respiratory support via NIV, CPAP, and supplemental oxygen for nearly twenty-six days.
Doctors also treated several serious complications, including:
- Infection (sepsis)
- Brain-related bleeding (subgaleal hemorrhage)
- Heart condition (Patent Ductus Arteriosus)
- Apnea (breathing pauses)
- Weak bones (osteopenia)
Throughout the course of treatment, the infant was provided with breast milk-based nutrition. This contributed to gradual weight gain, improved immunity, and overall developmental progress during the extended period of neonatal intensive care.
Baby Recovery and Safe Discharge
After approximately two months of intensive treatment, as the infant's weight increased to 1825 grams, the corrected gestational age reached 35 weeks and 2 days.
Evaluations done before discharge showed that the infant's condition was stable. Echocardiogram results were normal, and early neurological and retinal findings were monitored carefully by medical staff.
As a testament to the dedication and teamwork of our NICU doctors, nurses, and multidisciplinary medical teams, the infant was successfully discharged in stable condition on March 10th.
