A Journey of Courage: Recovery from Guillain-Barré Syndrome After 98 Days in ICU
June 21 2025 | Medicover Hospitals | Navi MumbaiA story of courage, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
At Medicover Hospitals Navi Mumbai, we witness incredible stories of strength, resilience, and the power of expert care. This is the inspiring story of a 48-year-old man who battled Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare and life-threatening neurological condition, and made a remarkable recovery.
A Sudden Onset of Weakness
The patient's condition was dire when he arrived, with a rapidly progressing weakness that developed over just two days. He was immediately admitted to the ICU under the care of Dr. Jayendra Yadav
Diagnostic tests, including Nerve Conduction Studies (NCV), a test to measure the speed of electrical signals through the nerves and Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF), the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Analysis confirmed the diagnosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare and life-threatening neurological condition that causes muscle weakness and paralysis.
A Challenging ICU Course
He was started on IV Immunoglobulin (IVIG), but his condition worsened. The weakness spread to his respiratory muscles, bulbar muscles, and even his ocular muscles, eventually requiring invasive ventilation.
Due to the severity of the disease, plasmapheresis was initiated. As is often seen in severe GBS, he developed autonomic dysfunction, including extreme bradycardia (very slow heart rate) triggered even by minor stimuli. He experienced multiple cardiac arrests, requiring repeated CRP. Eventually, a temporary pacemaker was placed to prevent further episodes.
He also developed a pneumothorax (collapsed lung), for which an intercostal drain (ICD) was inserted. His ICU stay was further complicated by multiple episodes of lower respiratory tract infections with septic shock, all of which were treated successfully with appropriate antibiotics.
During his stay, he also received two courses of IV Rituximab, and his strength started to improve slowly with continued respiratory support and physiotherapy.
Turning the Corner
After 96 days in the ICU, his condition stabilized:
- He was weaned off the ventilator
- Physiotherapy was intensified
- He was decannulated (tracheostomy tube removed)
- Oral feeds were restarted
Eventually, he was shifted to the ward where further speech, swallow, and mobility rehabilitation continued for two more weeks.
A Heartwarming Recovery
At the time of discharge, the patient was:
- Fully awake and alert
- Breathing without support
- Off the tracheostomy
- Regaining strength (upper limb: 2/5, lower limb: 1/5)
- Committed to regular physiotherapy and follow-up
He now visits us as an outpatient and recently returned to the ICU, not as a patient, but to personally thank the team who stood by him through this challenging journey. With immense determination, he aims to walk into the ICU unaided in three months to show just how far he has come.
A Team Effort (Behind the Scenes)
This incredible recovery would not have been possible without the relentless efforts of our multidisciplinary team:
- Dr. Jayendra Yadav (Consultant Neurologist)
- Dr. Vinod Amritlal Yadav (Consultant Intensivist)
- Dr. Aditi Jain(Consultant Intensivist)
- Dr. Tamiruddin Chanwade (Consultant Cardiologist)
- Dr. Shahid Patel (Consultant Pulmonologist)
- Dr. Farha Naaz Kazi (ENT and Swallow Expert)
- Junior consultants: Dr. Dnyaneshwar Rathod, Dr. Alaukik Goyal, Dr. Saurabh Tod
- ICU junior doctors, nursing staff, and physiotherapists
A special mention goes to our nursing team. Despite a three-month stay in the ICU, the patient did not develop a single pressure sore, a testament to their exemplary care. Our team of physiotherapists also played a vital role in helping the patient regain strength, movement, and confidence.
A Message of Hope
Guillain-Barré Syndrome is rare, unpredictable, and often life-threatening. This case, with its multiple complications—including respiratory failure, autonomic dysfunction, infections, and prolonged ICU stay—could have had a very different outcome. But, dedicated medical care, teamwork, and the patient’s and his family’s never-give-up attitude brought about a miraculous recovery.
At Medicover, we don't just treat conditions—we walk with our patients through every step of their healing journey. This story stands as a shining example of resilience, expert care, and the human spirit.
