Patient Words
I was suffering from severe facial pain that made even simple daily activities like eating or washing my face extremely difficult. I then sought specialised treatment from Dr Anand Dank, and after the surgery, my quality of life improved remarkably. I am deeply grateful for the relief from pain and truly appreciate the attentive medical care and constant support provided by the hospital staff throughout my recovery.
What is Trigeminal Neuralgia
Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN), also known as tic douloureux, is a chronic neurological condition that causes sudden, severe facial pain. The pain occurs due to irritation or compression of the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensory information from the face to the brain. In many cases, the compression is caused by a blood vessel pressing against the nerve near its origin in the brainstem.
Common symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia include:
- Suddenly, a sharp, electric shock-like facial pain
- Brief but intense pain episodes that may recur frequently
- Pain triggered by routine activities such as chewing, talking, brushing teeth, or light touch
- Pain usually affects one side of the face, involving the jaw, cheek, lips, or gums
Initial treatment often involves medications such as anti-seizure drugs to control nerve pain. When medications fail to provide adequate relief or cause intolerable side effects, surgical treatment is recommended to address the underlying nerve compression and provide long-term relief.
What Treatment did we provide to Chaya Waghmare at Medicover?
At Medicover Hospitals, Chaya Waghmare underwent a specialized trigeminal neuralgia surgery under the care of Dr Anand Dank. Given the severity and persistence of her symptoms, surgical intervention was selected as the most effective option to relieve nerve compression and eliminate the source of her pain.
The surgical treatment focused on:
- Identifying and relieving pressure on the trigeminal nerve
- Addressing the root cause of the nerve irritation responsible for the pain
- Providing long-term pain relief where medications were no longer effective
The procedure was successfully performed, resulting in significant pain relief and restoration of normal daily function. Following surgery and recovery, Mrs Waghmare was able to resume everyday activities without debilitating facial pain, marking a major improvement in her overall quality of life.
