What is a Collarbone Fracture in an Accident?
A collarbone fracture, medically known as a clavicle fracture, is a common injury following high-impact events such as road or railway accidents, falls, or sports injuries. The collarbone connects the breastbone (sternum) to the shoulder blade and plays a key role ina shoulder stability and arm movement. When fractured, it often causes immediate pain and functional limitation.
In accident-related injuries, the fracture may be severe, displaced, or involve multiple bone fragments, making natural healing difficult without surgical intervention.
Common symptoms of a collarbone fracture include:
- Sharp pain that worsens with shoulder or arm movement
- Visible swelling, bruising, or a noticeable bump near the shoulder
- Restricted shoulder movement
- A grinding or clicking sensation when attempting to move the arm
While simple fractures may heal with rest and immobilization using a sling, complex or displaced fractures often require surgery to restore alignment and prevent long-term complications such as deformity, weakness, or chronic pain.
What Treatment did we provide to Sinthiya Disuza at Medicover?
Given the complexity of Sinthiya Disuza's collarbone fracture, Dr Nikhil Bharambe recommended Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) as the most effective treatment. This surgical approach is commonly used for unstable or severely displaced fractures to ensure proper healing and restore shoulder function.
- Open Reduction: A surgical incision was made to directly access and accurately realign the fractured bone fragments.
- Internal Fixation: Specialized orthopedic plates and screws were used to securely hold the bone in the correct position during healing.
This procedure provided the necessary stability for proper bone healing. After surgery, Sinthiya followed a structured rehabilitation plan under medical guidance to gradually restore shoulder strength, flexibility, and normal movement. The successful surgery and attentive post-operative care enabled her to recover confidently and return to her daily activities.
