About Prachi's Treatment

Prachi, a resilient 17-year-old, has been battling Thalassemia Major since she was six months old. Over the years, her condition required frequent blood transfusions that increased to as many as three times a week. Alongside this, she developed hypersplenism, a condition where her massively enlarged spleen destroyed blood cells faster than her body could replenish them. Her rare O-negative blood group added further complications during transfusions.

Seeking a long-term solution, Prachi and her family came to Medicover Hospitals, Nashik, where Dr G B Singh, Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist, evaluated her. After comprehensive planning, including pre-operative vaccinations, a Laparoscopic Splenectomy was recommended to improve her overall blood health and reduce transfusion dependency.

In the Patient's Words

"Since I was nine months old, I have depended on blood transfusions. When the frequency increased to three transfusions a week, life became very difficult. My enlarged spleen made everything worse. After all preparations, Dr G B Singh and his team performed a laparoscopic splenectomy, even though my spleen was very large and I am short in height. They successfully removed a 1.6 kg spleen. I recovered very fast and was discharged in just three days. This surgery has changed my life and given me hope for a healthier future."

What is Thalassemia Major?

Thalassemia Major is a serious inherited blood disorder where the body cannot produce enough healthy hemoglobin, the molecule that helps red blood cells carry oxygen. This leads to chronic anemia and lifelong dependency on blood transfusions.

Common complications include:

  • Severe fatigue and weakness
  • Iron overload due to frequent transfusions
  • Bone deformities and delayed growth
  • Enlarged spleen (splenomegaly), causing rapid breakdown of blood cells

When the spleen becomes too large and worsens anemia, as in Prachi's case, a splenectomy is considered to help manage the disease better and reduce the transfusion burden.

What Treatment did we provide to Prachi at Medicover?

Prachi underwent a Laparoscopic splenectomy performed by Dr G B Singh and his expert team. This minimally invasive surgical approach was selected to ensure:

  • Less post-operative pain
  • Smaller incisions and minimal scarring
  • Faster healing and recovery
  • Reduced hospital stay, discharged in 3 days

Despite the technical challenge caused by her short stature and massively enlarged spleen, the surgery was highly successful. The removal of the 1.6 kg spleen helped improve her blood cell survival and brought major relief from her symptoms.
