What is Herpes Zoster?
Herpes Zoster, commonly known as shingles, is a viral infection that causes a painful skin rash, usually appearing as a band or strip of blisters on one side of the body. It occurs due to the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the nervous system and may reactivate later in life.
When reactivated, the virus travels along nerve pathways to the skin, leading to inflammation, pain, and rash. While shingles is generally not life-threatening, it can cause intense discomfort and, if untreated, may result in long-term nerve pain.
Common symptoms of Herpes Zoster include:
- Burning, stabbing, or shooting nerve pain
- Tingling, itching, or sensitivity of the skin
- Red or discolored patches on the skin
- Fluid-filled blisters that dry and crust over within 7-10 days
Early medical treatment is crucial, as antiviral medications can shorten the illness, reduce pain severity, and lower the risk of complications such as postherpetic neuralgia (persistent nerve pain after the rash heals).
