What is an ACL Tear?
An ACL tear is an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), one of the key ligaments that stabilize the knee joint. The ACL connects the thighbone (femur) to the shinbone (tibia) and helps control rotational movements of the knee.
ACL injuries commonly occur during activities that involve sudden stops, twisting movements, or rapid changes in direction, such as sports and physical training.
Common symptoms of an ACL tear include:
- A popping sensation in the knee at the time of injury
- Sudden pain and swelling
- Difficulty walking or bearing weight
- Loss of knee stability or a "giving way" feeling
Severe or complete ACL tears usually require surgical reconstruction to restore knee stability and allow patients to safely return to normal activities.
