If anyone thinks, the stroke is only for old people, they need to think again. Recently, a 33-year-old young man Mr. Chaitanya Kumar never expected to experience a stroke was brought to the emergency department of Medicover Hospitals(Formerly Maxcure Hospitals) when he had difficulty in walking and talking and was experiencing weakness in the left side of the body. Brain imaging confirmed the diagnosis of stroke.

Dr. Sita Chitela, Chief Neurologist, Medicover Hospitals said, “Upon brain imaging, we found that the artery supplying blood to the right side of the brain is completely blocked. We started clot buster drug, tPA. However, as it was a large clot, we have referred him to the endovascular management. He was immediately shifted to the cath lab where the artery was opened and mechanical thrombectomy restored blood flow. Now, the patient has gained some power on the left side and has regained functional independence. Currently, he is undergoing stroke rehabilitation. Dr. Ashish Kumar, Chief Endovascular neurosurgeon who performed the mechanical thrombectomy stressed about the importance of this procedure in clearing these large blockages. He spoke about the time and importance of re-establishing the blood flow to the brain and how it can help in the better functional recovery of the patients.

“The chances of stroke in young people has increased tremendously due to the lifestyle and stress they are going through. The key factor to manage the stroke in young people is to identify and treat the underlying causes. Reducing risk factors is important to prevent the first stroke or reoccurring the stroke. In case of any stroke symptoms, work with your doctor to identify underlying causes; maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly; Eat a diet low in saturated fat and high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; Recognize conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol and start controlling at an early age; and most importantly, avoid alcohol, drugs, and smoking,” Dr. Sita added.

Stroke in young people can mean a lifetime of recovery and a loss of many productive years. So, it is always advisable to look for the symptoms and prevent the stroke.
