According to the National Institute on Substance Abuse (NIDA), the drug enhances the function of the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine. Adderall primarily activates the sympathetic nervous system, which causes pupil dilation, elevated blood pressure and heart rate, and increased sweating as part of the body's "fight or flight" response.
