The mother and child bond is inseparable! The moment a child is born, it is the beginning of motherhood. The strongest miracles in life are the smallest ones, like babies. On World Prematurity Day, 17th November, Medicover Hospitals, Vizag, has joined their voice with the international theme for 2022 “A parent’s embrace: a powerful therapy. Enable skin-to-skin contact from the moment of birth.”

The world observes World Prematurity Day on 17th November every year, and it is celebrated to raise awareness of the problems and burden of preterm birth globally. Premature birth is a serious health problem as babies have higher rates of disabilities and fewer chances of survival. Because of these health concerns, preemies are given extra medical attention and assistance immediately after delivery. This day is to raise awareness about preterm birth and the challenges that come with it. It is a worldwide appeal for infant care.

Given the rising statistics, it is observed that about 15 million preterm babies are born worldwide every year, which is accounting for about 10 % of infants born. The Medicover hospital has initiated a program by gathering information about preterm babies who have been born in their hospital along with the general public support to raise awareness regarding preterm births, concerns of preterm babies & their families, their possible health issues, along with the doctor’s role in providing them necessary care for the first few years after birth.

The state-renowned Consultant Neonatologist & Pediatrician Dr. Sai Sunil Kishore, who saved about 7500 premature & low birth weight babies, has expressed concerns about these alarming statistics of preterm and low birth weight deliveries. Premature babies are small in size and face health issues such as respiratory and heart problems, jaundice, eye disease, anemia and infections.

With the availability of 24*7 special medical care by neonatologists, trained nurses and the best NICU facilities makes it possible to save premature babies with normal neurodevelopmental outcomes. They need incubator care for the first 2 weeks, ventilator support for lung immaturity, optimal nutrition and prevention of infections. For the initial few days, they require parenteral nutrition. Mother's milk (MOM) is also helpful to prevent prematurity complications like breathing, digestive and eye problems and infections.

On the occasion of World Prematurity Day, Dr. Sai Sunil Kishore, Consultant Neonatologist & Pediatrician, Medicover Hospitals, Vizag, spoke on the importance of providing special care and medical attention to premature babies.
