Rifampin is an antibiotic which is used for the treatment of tuberculosis. It can also be used for reducing certain bacteria in nose and throat which would cause meningitis or any other infections. Rifampin tablets also prevent you from spreading these bacteria to other people, but it will not treat an active meningitis infection. It is also used to treat infections present in nose and throat.

Headaches- Drink plenty of water. If you are facing a severe headacheask your doctor to prescribe you with pain killers.
Rifampin comes in Capsule forms and this medication should be taken in empty stomach with a full glass of water 1 hour or 2 hours before the meal. If Rifampin tablets are used for treating tuberculosis then it should be taken once daily.
If rifampin tablets are used for treating Neisseria meningitides then it can be taken twice daily for 2 days or once daily for 4 days. Tell your doctor if you are not able to swallow the tablets your doctor can ask you to take liquids.

Children-
The bacteria which cause tuberculosis are very hard to kill. Therefore the dosage should be taken for 3-6 months. The dose should depend on the weight of the children.
Missing one or two-dose of Rifampin won’t show any effect on your body. The skipped dose causes no problem. But with some medication, it won’t work if you don’t take the dosage on time. If you miss a dose some sudden chemical change may affect your body. In some cases, your doctor would advise you to take the prescribed medicine as soon as possible if you have missed the dose.
Overdose of a drug can be accidental. If you have taken more than the prescribed Rifampin tablets there is a chance of getting a harmful effect on your body’s functions. Overdose of a medicine can lead to some medical emergency.
Pregnant women
Rifampin is not evaluated for pregnant women. If a woman is using the drug during her pregnancy there is no such high risk of pregnancy loss, birth defects or any other problems. But to be on safe side consult your doctor before taking the medicine. If this medication is used in the last weeks of pregnancy then it may cause bleeding in mother or can affect the newborn baby.
Breastfeeding
Rifampin passes into breast milk. It can cause some side effects to a child who is breastfed. These can include diarrhea, vomiting and rash. Before taking Rifampin while breastfeeding consult your doctor.
Direct contact with heat, air and light may damage your medicines. The exposure of medicine may cause some harmful effects. The medicine must be kept in a safe place and out of children’s reach.
Mainly the drug should be kept at room temperature between 68ºF and 77ºF (20ºC and 25ºC).
