What is Pioglitazone?

Pioglitazone is a prescription drug. This comes in the form of an immediate-release tablet and oral extended-release tablet. This is available in the brand- name drug called Actoplus Met and Actoplus Met XR. The immediate-release tablet is available in the form of a generic drug.

Pioglitazone Uses

Pioglitazone is used for improving the blood sugar control; in adults who are having Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The medication is not used for treating type 1 diabetes. Pioglitazone tablets are used with a healthy diabetic diet, regular exercise, weight control, smoking reduction and for careful monitoring of blood glucose. Pioglitazone can be taken as a single therapy or can be taken with a combination of metformin (it’s a different class of anti-diabetic drugs which can lower the blood glucose).

    Dosage for Type 2 diabetes

    Adult dosage

    Immediate- release tablet
    *2550 mg metformin/ 45 mg Pioglitazone per day. The medication is taken as 850 metformin/ 15 mg Pioglitazone three times per day.

    Extended-release tablet
    *2000 mg metformin/ 45 mg Pioglitazone per day. This is to be taken as one 1000 mg metformin/ 15 mg Pioglitazone extended- release tablet plus one, 1000 mg metformin/ 30 mg Pioglitazone extended- release tablet once per day.

    Missed Dose:

    Missing one or two-dose of Pioglitazone won’t show any effect on your body. The skipped dose causes no problem. But with some medication, it won’t work if you don’t take the dosage on time. If you miss a dose some sudden chemical change may affect your body. In some cases, your doctor would advise you to take the prescribed medicine as soon as possible if you have missed the dose.

    Overdose:
