These functional disorders are most ommon which affect the GI tract and can be treated based on the particular symptoms a person is experiencing.     Constipation is a condition of the digestive system which refers to hard and infrequent bowel movements. It usually occurs due to poor diet and eating disorders. A person who suffers from constipation strains during the bowel movements and causes even anal problems such as fissures and hemorrhoids. Constipation may indicate a serious medical condition if experienced very often.

    Constipation can be treated usually by following tips mentioned below:
    • Having a fiber rich diet
    • Regular exercise
    • Avoiding to resist the urge to have a bowel movement

    If the above tips don’t help to treat constipation, laxatives can be used temporarily. It is better to follow the instructions on the laxative medicine and take doctor’s advice, as overuse of laxative can actually worsen the symptoms of constipation.

    Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):

    Irritable bowel syndrome is a long-term condition of the digestive system that refers to a group of symptoms including abdominal pain, bloating and changes in the patterns of bowel movements. The symptoms may vary from person to person and affect some people more severely than others. Emotional stress and certain foods are some factors that can trigger IBS.

    • Diet with inadequate amount of fiber
    • No physical activity
    • Having large amounts of dairy products
    • Emotional stress
    • Resisting the urge of bowel movements
    • Overuse of laxatives that weaken the bowel muscles
    • Using antacid medicines containing calcium or aluminum
    • Pregnancy
    • Frequent changes in daily routine
