Endoscopy Test

Endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure mainly used to examine a person’s digestive portion. An endoscope procedure contains a flexible tube with a light and a camera attached to it, doctor can see the pictures of your digestive tract on a colour display monitor.

Your doctor inserts an endoscope through mouth. Your doctor can use forceps (tongs) and scissors on the endoscope to operate or remove tissue for biopsy.

    Preparing for Endoscopy:

    1. Maintain empty stomach before the endoscopy procedure.
    2. Do not eat or drink for at least 6 hours before the endoscopy procedure.
    3. Complete the required documentation as per the institution norms accepting the test procedure and its implications.
    4. Alert your doctor or technician with your current medication.

    During Endoscopy Procedure:

You will be navigated towards the endoscopy room and will be requested to rest yourself on the procedure bed. A well trained nurse will assist you during the procedure. Based on your interest and health condition, doctors may use a local anaesthesia or give you a tablet.

A plastic mouth piece will be placed on the tip of the mouth to keep your mouth slightly open as the scopy will drived through the mouth. It will not cause any pain when the doctor passes the endoscope into your stomach, nor it will interfere your breathing at any time. It would approximately take up to 15 minutes to examine all the areas in your stomach. Some air will be passed through the tube to have clear view of the stomach in the monitor; the air is sucked out at the end of the procedure. When the procedure is finished, the scope will be removed easily.

    Post Endoscopy Procedure:

Post endoscopy procedure you will be requested to take rest for at least 30 minutes. After this you can eat and drink normally as per doctor’s advice. You may feel sore throat for the rest of the day. Your doctor will prescribe the medication if required.
