  • Coughing is a reflex action that clears foreign mucus or irritants from the throat. While everyone coughs to clear their throat from time to time, several conditions can lead to a more frequent whooping. Sharp whooping lasts less than three weeks. It goes away or at least improves significantly within two weeks. If it lasts three to eight weeks and improves by the end of that period, it is considered a subacute cough.
